A Wedding Cake's Journey: From Initial Enquiry to Cutting the Cake

When couples see their wedding cake on the day, it's easy to think of it as the finished product. But every cake has its own journey, starting months before the wedding and ending with that all-important cake-cutting photo.

Here's a little look behind the scenes at what happens from your first enquiry through to your guests enjoying the final slice.

The Initial Enquiry

The journey begins when you get in touch with your wedding date, venue and a few details about the style of cake you're considering.

The first thing I do is check my availability and confirm that your venue falls within my delivery radius. Once I know I'm available, we can start discussing your ideas in more detail.

Guest Numbers & Cake Size

One of the most important pieces of information is your guest count.

The number of guests helps determine the size of cake you'll need and, in many cases, the number of tiers. If you're planning to serve the cake as dessert to all of your guests, you'll generally need a larger cake than if it's simply being served alongside an evening buffet.

At this stage, I'll advise on the most suitable size to ensure there's enough cake for everyone.

Design Inspiration

Next comes the fun part.

Many couples have a rough idea of the style they're looking for, while others arrive with a Pinterest board full of inspiration. Whether you know exactly what you want or are still exploring ideas, inspiration images can be incredibly helpful in creating a design that complements your wedding day.

The Cake Tasting

One of my favourite parts of the process is the cake tasting.

You'll receive eight cupcakes in up to four flavours of your choice from my flavour list. We arrange a mutually convenient collection date and time, and you can take them home to enjoy in the comfort of your own surroundings.

The tasting costs £40, which is deducted from your final cake balance should you decide to proceed with your booking.

Securing Your Date

Once you're happy to move forward, a 50% non-refundable deposit secures your wedding date in my diary.

At this point, your booking is confirmed and we can begin finalising all the exciting details.

Choosing Flavours & Finalising the Design

With your tasting complete, you'll choose your final cake flavours and we'll confirm the finished design.

This is where all the details come together, from the overall style and colour palette to any decorative elements that will make the cake uniquely yours.

Cake Stands & Knives

A question I often get asked is whether couples need to provide a cake stand and knife.

In most cases, these are supplied by your venue or caterer, but it's always worth checking in advance so there are no surprises on the day.

One Month Before the Wedding

Around a month before your wedding, I gather the final details needed for delivery and setup.

This includes your venue contact details so I can arrange access, parking and confirm exactly where the cake will be displayed.

If your cake will feature fresh flowers, I'll also request your florist's details so I can liaise directly with them and ensure the flowers on your cake coordinate beautifully with the rest of your wedding flowers.

Delivery & Setup

On the wedding day, I deliver your cake to the venue and complete the setup.

Depending on the design, this may include stacking tiers on-site, preparing and attaching fresh flowers using food-safe materials, and ensuring every detail is perfect before I leave.

Once set up, the cake is ready to take its place as part of your celebration.

The Cake Cutting

Then comes the moment you've been waiting for.

After months of planning, designing, baking and decorating, it's time for the cake cutting — and, of course, the photographs that follow. It's one of the most memorable moments of the day and often produces some of the most beautiful images from your wedding.

The Best Part

Finally, your guests get to enjoy the cake.

After all the planning and preparation, seeing guests enjoy every slice is what it's all about. A wedding cake isn't just a centrepiece; it's a part of the celebration, shared with the people you've chosen to spend your special day with.
